It is located to the West of the village and archaeological site of Tulum, in the vicinity of the village of the same name. As for other sites in the Maya area, there is no Epigraphic evidence that allows to know the name that would have carried the Prehispanic settlement; However, some colonial and ethnographic references area, allowed that during the 1930s of the 20th century, 

Eric Thompson pointed out that the name of the site would have been Kinchil Cobá, in allusion to the name of the Maya Solar Dios and a denomination essentially geographical that relate to the Mayan word "Cob" (or "Kob"), muddy or minced, and "Ha", water, which would form the name "place of muddy or minced water" probably in reference to the lakes in lathe city was built which.

COBA is located to the East of the town of Coba, in the municipality of solidadridad, Quintana Roo. From Cancun, it is directed to the site by federal highway 180 Cancun - Chetumal, and arriving at Tulum, the deviation of 47kms is taken. Which leads to the village and archaeological site.

These ruins are approximately two hours and a half from Cancun and are very different from other archaeological sites of the Yucatan peninsula, before anything it being located on one side of 4 natural lakes, very rare thing in the peninsula, these lakes are believed that they gave origin to its name which means "Water inner agitated by the wind". Then because they are not so explored and restored such as Chichen Itza and Tulum. COBA has yet many structures and buildings still covered by jungle, which make these ruins a magical place that fires our imagination.


Only during the past years the importance of Coba has come to light, some archaeologists are convinced that over time be proven that these ruins will be one of the largest and important in the Yucatan peninsula. More than 5000 points with possible vestiges remain covered by the judges.

Since Coba is immersed in the jungle, and when we visited it is a feeling of being on a tour of expedition that we don't let imagine that it can be under those small mountains composed of Earth, branches, flowers, plants and possibly ruins.
